Children from a variety of backgrounds can be empowered by music and the arts. Through this empowerment, they will excel in other areas of life and strengthen not only their personal development, but also the development and peace of their communities.
The idea behind the creation of ALMA developed over a five-year period in the mind of Founder and Executive Director Cristal Downing. Having benefitted from a childhood in which music education was readily accessible, Cristal built an awareness of how important music is in childhood and adolescence. When she visited Guatemala in 2005 to volunteer at a home for orphaned and abused children, she immediately saw a need for creative activities in the children’s daily lives. Since then, she has noticed a similar trend throughout Latin America, a discrepancy between the importance placed upon music and the arts in cultural contexts, and the lack of funding given to those subjects in education. Her independent work in arts programming with children affected by violence strengthened her conviction in the power of the arts to facilitate positive change and peace in communities affected by poverty and conflict. Cristal therefore decided to create ALMA and work towards building an effective solution to these socioeconomic issues.
Los niños que vienen de una variedad de orígenes pueden ser motivados a través de la música y las artes a superar dificultades en otras áreas de la vida y a fortalecer no sólo su desarrollo personal sino también el desarrollo y paz de sus comunidades.
La idea detrás de la creación de ALMA fue desarrollada en un período de cinco años por su Fundadora y Directora Ejecutiva Cristal Downing. Después de haberse beneficiado con una niñez con pleno acceso a educación musical de primer nivel, Cristal adquirió un nivel de cognición cada vez mas fuerte sobre la importancia de la música en la niñez y la adolescencia. Durante su primera visita a Guatemala en 2005 como parte de un trabajo voluntario en un hogar de niños abusados y huérfanos, Cristal identificó inmediatamente la necesidad de crear actividades artísticas para la vida diaria de los niños. Esta tendencia la observó replicada en los diversos países que visitó en Latinoamérica, agregada a una discrepancia entre la importancia de la música y las artes en contextos culturales y la falta de fondos dados a esas disciplinas en la educación. Su trabajo haciendo programas artisticos con niños afectados por violencia fortaleció su creencia en el poder de los artes para facilitar el cambio positivo y la paz en comunidades afectadas por la pobreza y el conflicto. Conciente de esto, Cristal decidió crear ALMA y trabajar en la construcción de una solución efectiva a estos problemas socioeconómicos.
